What is UMC?

UMC is a team of healthcare providers who together call UMC our hospital. UMC has developed a strong and enduring culture, adhering to the motto Service is Our Passion, which sustains UMC as the employer of choice and the provider of choice for the West Texas and Eastern New Mexico region.

Our healthcare team’s mission is to serve all by providing safe, high quality care; to achieve excellent financial performance; and, as the primary teaching hospital for the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, to train tomorrow’s healthcare professionals. UMC has a strong and enduring partnership with Texas Tech which helps fulfill UMC’s mission and helps support Tech’s academic pursuits of education and research. As one grows, the other prospers.

During the last 36 years, UMC, a public hospital for the citizens of Lubbock County, has become a health system we can be proud of and a great investment for Lubbock County taxpayers. Together with Physician Network Services, UMC has seen an increase in market share, demand for service, and growth in reputation. Even during difficult economic times, sound financial planning has allowed the system to thrive. In 2013, UMC opened units dedicated to palliative care and out-patient surgery and began the expansion of the Timothy J. Harnar Regional Burn Center.

UMC's team has over 3,200 employees who serve an organization Texas Monthly has recognized as “one of the Best Companies to Work for in Texas®.” Together the medical staff, volunteers and supporters share a commitment to Service is Our Passion and establish a foundation on which to build.

Service is our Passion

James Berlingeri, Employee of the Year

Employee of the Year:

James Berlingeri, PCA

UMC presented its Employee of the Year award for 2013 to James Berlingeri, a patient care assistant and Emergency Center transporter, during the hospital’s 36th Annual Employee Recognition Banquet.

A UMC team member since 2007, Berlingeri was named employee of the month in September for demonstrating great compassion to a child whose father passed away shortly after arriving at the Emergency Center.

“We really enjoy having James on our team,” said John Parsons, director of the Emergency Center. “He goes above and beyond, and always does the right thing for our patients.”

UMC congratulates James on his accomplishment and thanks him for his dedication to UMC and its patients.

Dr. Rashif Saleem, Physician of the Year

Physician of the Year:

Dr. Rashif Saleem, M.D.
Internal Medicine Associates of Lubbock

Dr. Rashif Saleem is homegrown talent. He completed his Family Practice Residency at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in December 2012, and soon after began impressing patients in his practice with Internal Medicine Associates of Lubbock.

For his dedication to families in Lubbock, UMC is proud to honor Dr. Saleem as Physician of the Year for 2013.

The award is chosen from the previous year’s Physicians of the Month. These are physicians who treat patients with compassion and respect, excel in service, show commitment to teamwork and leadership and provide unsurpassed health care.

Employee Satisfaction

We’ve learned that what is best for patients is also best for employees. In fact, the correlation between patient satisfaction scores and employee satisfaction scores indicates we can’t really satisfy our patients until we first listen to, engage and retain our valued employees.

That’s why UMC has made employee satisfaction a priority in the past decade, and the numbers prove it. In 2014, once again UMC scored in the top 10% of hospitals for employee satisfaction.

UMC has been named one of the Best Companies to Work for in Texas® six of the past seven years, with features on our workplace environment appearing in Texas Monthly. Employee turnover, something with which teaching hospitals around the country must contend, has fallen 50 percent in the past decade.
